The Lariz Tower

The tower house of Lariz is an urban palace of the renaissance period, of a high quality construction and rich decoration. It was built towards the end of the XV century. It was completely restored in 2009.

It is believed that Queen Isabella the Catholic of Castile, 1474-1504, spent the night here in 1483 when she visited Durango to swear in the "fueros", regional laws and those of the wider administrative region: the "Merindad de Durango".

The building became a prison in the second half of the XIX century. On the window ledges on the ground floor you can still see where the prison bars had been.

Later it was converted to a dwelling house, which fell into disrepair. By the turn of the XXI century it was decide that it should be completely refurbished. It was duly restored to its former dignified elegance, as it must have looked in the days of splendour in the XV century.
