The Idol of Mikeldi

The sculpture known as The  Idol of Mikeldi, whose original is on display in the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, was discovered in the old chapel, since demolished, of San Vicente of Mikeldi in Durango.

Today a copy of the original can be seen in the street of Mikeldi, close to where it was first discovered.

The stone figure dates back to the II Iron Age, from the fifth to the first century B.C. Carved from a solid sandstone block, it represents, in a schematic form, an animal, and between its legs and under its belly it holds a disc.
