San Pedro is according to popular belief one of the oldest churches in Bizkaia.
A serious study of the church, however, should be wary of these legends, as the lack of written evidence makes it difficult to trace its history and put a date to its foundation. What we do have are the results of a recent multi-disciplinary study which show just how important the church and its environs were, both historically and archaeologically.
The edifice we see today would by its size and orientation place it in the XV century, built, we believe, on the site of an earlier medieval church. In the XVI century it was extended upwards and the porch we see today was added.
Tabira is the sum of two different elements: The Church of San Pedro and the chapel of Rosario, attached to the north side, since it was completed in the XVIII century.
In the park of Tabira can be seen the sculpture "Hirugarren Hilarria" by Nestor Basterretxea.
